The Walter S. Gibson Collection

The Rubenianum received the archive of the American art historian Prof. dr. Walter S. Gibson. Gibson was one of the authorities of the Bruegel investigation. His archive is the result of more than 60 years of research into 15th and 16th century Dutch and Flemish masters.

The American art historian Prof. dr. Walter S. Gibson (1932-2018) donated his extensive archive to the Rubenianum. Gibson has been researching and publishing since the 1970s about Bosch and especially about Bruegel. He collected material about the 15th and 16th century Dutch and Flemish artists for more than 60 years.

The 14-meter archive consists of 74 boxes and weighs approximately 1 ton. It includes quite a few unpublished materials. The bibliographic apparatus is particularly interesting. The thematic and iconographic focus and classification will enable researchers to find the most obscure publications with regard to Bruegel research.

The collection is currently being processed and can only be consulted in the reading room upon request after contact via rubenianum@antwerpen.be.
