Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard

The complete catalogue of Rubens's oeuvre

The Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard was initiated in the 1960s and is scheduled for completion in 2024. This work of many years is also a work of many hands and minds.

1968-2024

The oeuvre of Peter Paul Rubens includes an estimated 2,500-odd compositions and numbers around 10,000 works of art. The Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard was set up to provide a complete catalogue of this oeuvre. It is based on the Burchard documentation, which is where it derives its name.

The city of Antwerp embraced this project, which chimes with its long tradition of research on Rubens. Two-thirds of the work has currently been completed. The first volume appeared in 1968, and the last one will be published in 2024. The scholarly edition of the Corpus Rubenianum is overseen by the Centrum Rubenianum.

A comprehensive Approach

Not only every painting, every drawing and sketch by Rubens, but also all the prints and tapestries that were produced under Rubens’s supervision are discussed and interpreted in the Corpus Rubenianum. The 29 parts, each of which deals with a specific aspect, span the entire oeuvre. Not only the Burchard documentation but also all the research that has been conducted since the 1960s is incorporated into the Corpus Rubenianum. For each part, an author has been sought who could enrich the existing research material with his or her insights. In this way, the project once begun by the Rubens researcher Ludwig Burchard will be completed.
